4 × 6 drawing (80lb.)

4 × 6 drawing (80lb.) is one of the sketchbooks for my earlier work with life drawing. The images here vary in a mixture of mediums from graphite, pastel, compressed chalk, vine charcoal, and watercolor. This sketchbook has been completed and is open to collage.

5 x 5 Blue sketch

5 x 5 blue sketch is another sketchbook for my creative journey into smaller formats. In 2014, while I was left to my own devices outside of college courses, I started this sketchbook. I did this while attending SDAI’s “art gym” at the Museum of the Living Artist in Balboa Park here in San Diego. I continued using this blue sketchbook on occasion in 2015 at “art gym”, at “My Art Shed” in La Jolla, and in my Life Drawing class ARTF210C at San Diego Mesa College.

This five minute eraser sketch of Rob D. was updated with an addition of acrylic paint via a gel plate in 2023. This transitioned the sketchbook into use with a gel plate to apply acrylic paint to paper. Paper generally does not handle the moisture involved with acrylic paint, but works when done just right with a gel plate.

From this point in 2023, this became one of my new sketchbooks for photo reference drawing and painting. My photo references were derived from Instagram models and from my life model photography archive.

The 5 x 7 sketching (50 lb.) is a sketchpad for my fleurdecie.com site with several Instagram life model photo reference drawings mixed in.

5 x 7 rainbow sketch

The 5 x 7 rainbow sketch is another sketchbook originally intended for my fleurdecie.com site. After I started adding acrylic via a gel plate, I realized I could use this sketchbook similarly to the 5 x5 blue sketch above. Instagram life model photo reference drawings started getting mixed in changing the direction of this sketchbook.

5 x 8 Sketchbooks (65lb.)

5 × 8 sketchbooks (65lb.) have a variety of work. I continued experimenting with size, paper weight, mixed media, and improving my life drawing skills. Some of the images shown here remain in the books and others have been collaged or removed and added to portfolios. Pages are still available and likely to be added to until the sketchbooks are completed.

Volume One

5 × 8 sketch (65 lb.) Volume One contains life drawings of various life models at San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) in beautiful Balboa Park at the Museum of the Living Artist. This sketchbook, like others, is subject to change via collage, page removal, or even binding failure.

The life models included in this sketchbook are Ginger, John B., Lori S., Mandi, Nancy, Rob D., Sajda, Shaunna, @stuinsd, and @torirozebutt.

Volume Two

5 × 8 sketch (65 lb.) Volume Two includes drawings from fine art courses at San Diego Mesa College and independent study at San Diego Art Institute (SDAI), and My Art Shed in La Jolla. I also received a few opportunities to work with models independently. There was also some photo reference drawings and a bit of digital exploration.

6 x 9 black sketch

6 x 9 black sketch images are from live zoom sessions, live events with San Diego Gay Men’s Art Group, and photo reference models from various locations around the world via Instagram and photo reference from my own photography with various models.

9 x 12 toned gray

9×12 toned gray sketchbook begins with work from 2014 and continues into 2015. Most of the work is from independent study at SDAI in Balboa Park and from Life Drawing II at San Diego Mesa College. A few images from Life Drawing III are included. There are drawings from photo reference, sketch reference, and life models. There is also collage and abstract painting in this sketchbook. Collage has introduced some of my older flower work as evidenced by the cover page and a few others.

9 x 12 toned tan

9×12 toned tan 80lb. sketch notebook begins in 2014 with independent self study drawing sessions at San Diego Art Institute “Museum of the Living Artist” in Balboa Park . This sketchbook also includes images created at home with reference photography from various shoots also held at SDAI. More independent self study was also done with additional life drawing sessions at San Diego Art Department on Ray Street in North Park. The 9×12 toned tan 80lb. sketchbook also includes drawings from Life Drawing II (fall 2014) and Life Drawing III (spring 2015) at San Diego Mesa College.

5.5 × 8.5 mixed media 98lb sketchbook is an exploration into abstraction, scale and proportion, media and process, digital exploration, my “explore to create” and a “let go” and/or “go with the flow” approach.

Volume Two

7 x 10 mixed media 98lb. vol. 2 sketchbook contains a combination of abstract, flower, figurative art, photo reference and some collage. I’ve also included some of the digital art derived from images of this sketchbook as well as a few process pieces. This is a newer mixed media sketchbook with plenty of pages left to explore my creativity and create more sketchbook art.

The 9 × 12 mixed media 98lb. volume One sketchbook contains life drawings and collage work by Cie Ja from 2013 t0 2014 during independent study at home and during life drawing sessions at SDAI and SDAD. This sketchbook was revised with collage work and the evolution of some pieces into new works in 2015.

11 x 14 Volume One

The 11×14 mixed media 98lb sketchbook is filled with pages of life drawings, mono prints, screen prints, abstract painting, collage, and various mixed media work. A mixed media gold leaf mono print of Stu was selected (with it’s original ink drawing) for the San Diego Mesa College Student Art Show Fall 2014 from this sketchbook.

Life Model drawings are from both Fine Art life drawing courses at San Diego Mesa College and independent study at San Diego Art Institute’s Museum of the Living Artist drawing sessions. Mixed media paintings, drawings, collages, abstracts, and other images in this book were done in the home studio.
